A WORKSHOP ON THEATRE PRACTICE 🎭

Our college SVMCTE organized an insightful and interactive Theatre Practice Workshop on 8th January 2025. The session was led by Priyatha Bharathan, a talented and experienced theatre practitioner and faculty member at Sabarigiri College, Anchal. The event took place in the college seminar hall and commenced promptly at 10:00 AM.

The workshop began with a warm welcome speech by the Principal, who addressed the importance of theatre in education and personal development. The principal emphasized how such sessions provide students with opportunities to explore creativity, confidence, and communication in a dynamic way.

Following the inaugural remarks, Priyatha Bharathan took over the session with great energy and enthusiasm. She began the class with a poem on drama, setting a reflective and artistic tone for the workshop. The poem beautifully captured the essence of theatre and its power to convey emotions, stories, and social messages.

The first activity of the day involved voice modulation exercises, where each student was asked to say the word “woosh” in different styles and tones. This playful yet effective activity helped participants understand how vocal variation can drastically change the mood and meaning of a performance. It encouraged students to break out of their comfort zones and experiment with their voices, an essential skill for any aspiring actor.

After the warm-up, the teacher formed small groups from the participants to begin team-based activities. The real challenge began in the afternoon session, when students were given a unique task: to perform a short drama without using any language. This activity required participants to rely entirely on facial expressions, gestures, posture, and movement to convey their message. It pushed the boundaries of creativity and tested the participants' non-verbal communication skills.

To help students immerse themselves in this task, Priyatha Bharathan played a soft instrumental music track. As the music played, she instructed the students to lie down quietly and imagine themselves as seeds. Gradually, with the rhythm and flow of the music, the students had to rise and grow like trees, symbolizing growth, transformation, and connection with nature. This was a profound and meditative exercise that combined elements of physical theatre, nature imagery, and imagination.

In the evening, the performances by each group were showcased. The teacher observed and later appreciated the efforts of each group, offering constructive feedback on their strengths and areas for improvement. She applauded the students for their dedication, expressiveness, and team spirit.

Finally, a feedback session was conducted, where students shared their experiences, learnings, and reflections. Many expressed that the workshop helped them discover a new side of themselves, especially the ability to communicate effectively without words. The session concluded on a positive note, leaving everyone inspired and enthusiastic about theatre and its powerful impact.
